It took the magnetic rings a microsecond to retrieve data from memory. This might seem funny at this moment because now we can receive data at much higher speed than that. But retrieving data at microsecond was a magnificent achievement way back in the 50s.

So, it can be said that with the making of the core magnetic rings, we could see the birth of matrix core memory.

Bernard Widrow, Jay Forrester’s colleague in the Project Whirlwind, said that they could not believe that they had done this miracle with memory that seemed to them more or less impossible when they started with Project Whirlwind.

Jay Forrester filed an application for a patent on his May11, 1951 invention. The Project Whirlwind carried on with its work till 1959, however the ends for a flight simulator, the primary cause and reason for their research, could not be met with.
