The 11th day of May be known and remembered for many important events in History but this very day in the year 1951 brought about a significant development in the world of computers. Earlier computers used to be bulky devices weighing almost 100 pounds and were used solely for and by the military.

This was a time when information was retrieved from cathode rays. But then there arose a need for a faster computer so that real-time flight simulations could be run by the Navy. The task was tough but not impossible. Many a brilliant minds came forth to achieve their need for a flight simulator. One among them was Jay Forrester.

An MIT researchers’ team under the leadership of professor jay Forrester came to the rescue of the Navy at that time. They developed a 3D magnetic structure named Project Whirlwind. The structure was a plane that was made of wires and cores (magnetic rings). Each of the magnetic rings i.e. Cores could store 1 bit data. A sole read-and-write cycle could access every bit of data stored on memory plane. Hence, in magnetic core memory, people saw the birth of the first reliable, relatively high-speed and practical RAM (random access memory). It took the magnetic rings a microsecond to retrieve data from memory. This might seem funny at this moment because now we can receive data at much higher speed than that. But retrieving data at microsecond was a magnificent achievement way back in the 50s.

So, it can be said that with the making of the core magnetic rings, we could see the birth of matrix core memory.

Bernard Widrow, Jay Forrester’s colleague in the Project Whirlwind, said that they could not believe that they had done this miracle with memory that seemed to them more or less impossible when they started with Project Whirlwind.

Jay Forrester filed an application for a patent on his May11, 1951 invention. The Project Whirlwind carried on with its work till 1959, however the ends for a flight simulator, the primary cause and reason for their research, could not be met with.
